When it comes to finding a food storage container that works well for meal prep, there are plenty of plastic container options to choose from. But if you’re someone who values getting the most out of your weekly meal plan, you’ll love the features that Freshware’s 2-compartment containers offer.

Size

These Freshware containers can hold up to 32 oz. of food between two compartments, which is roughly 4 oz. bigger than Promoze’s single compartment plastic containers. With roughly ½ cup more space for food, they’re a great choice for people who prefer to enjoy larger portions of their favorite meals. But even if you’re someone who sticks to smaller portions, the additional 4 oz. comes in handy if you need extra space for your favorite dips and condiments.

Material

Like many other plastic containers, these containers use BPA-free polypropylene (PP) plastic, a sturdy, food-grade plastic that’s perfect for food storage containers. PP plastic is well known for holding up to both cooling and heating and isn’t as likely to melt or warp in the microwave or freezer.

Freshware’s lids are also made of clear BPA-free plastic, which allows you to easily see the contents of your prepped meals without needing to remove the lids. And the corners of the lids contain ridges for stacking, which helps reinforce the already durable plastic. (Just be aware that the corner flaps of the lids are extremely thin and prone to breaking, so you should still handle them carefully.)

Features

One of my favorite things about these plastic containers is the leak-proof lids. Not only do they prevent spills to the outside, but the divider on the lids also provides leak protection between compartments. However, the compartments are only leak-proof when the lid is fully closed — so you’ll have to press down firmly along the divider if you want a leak-proof seal.

By the way, remember those reinforced lids we talked about earlier? Well, the ridges in the corners of the lids that reinforce the plastic also allow you to easily stack your containers in the fridge or freezer, which can help save you more storage space.

Storage

We tested the storage capacity of these 2-compartment containers with a quick and easy meal prep recipe: spicy gochujang tofu over rice with a side of broccoli.

Because these containers feature two compartments, we were easily able to keep our rice and tofu separated from the broccoli with no risk of leakage between the compartments. And extra space in the containers also meant that we were able to fit a good amount of our portioned meal prep ingredients in both compartments.

As for our end-of-the-week meal quality, the leak-proof lids provided a strong seal that helped keep our rice bowls fresh in the fridge without the rice becoming crunchy or going bad. (With that being said, if you’re looking for a container with a true airtight seal, check out my review for Prep Naturals’ 2-compartment glass meal prep containers.)

Heating

If you’re looking to spend even less time in the kitchen, you can easily save a few minutes (and dishes) by reheating your food directly in these Freshware meal prep containers — straight from the fridge and the freezer.

Microwave

Most plastic meal prep containers are microwave-safe, and these Freshware food storage containers are no different. In fact, according to Freshware, their containers can handle temperatures from -40 degrees F all the way up to 250 degrees F. As always, just remember to keep the lids out of the microwave if you plan to reheat your meals this way.

Cleaning

With dishwasher-safe plastic, you can quickly and easily clean up even the messiest of meals after using these containers. One thing to keep in mind, however, is that you’ll need to handwash the lids separately if you want to keep them from warping.

Dishwasher

Although only the containers themselves are listed as dishwasher-safe, we did test both the containers and the lids in the dishwasher (on the top shelf, of course). Even after almost a week of holding sticky ingredients like gochujang sauce, these containers held up in the normal wash cycle perfectly without any warping. As for the lids, they did appear to experience some warping due to the high heat of the wash cycle.

Handwashing

Even if you’re not able to wash these lids in the dishwasher, a quick rinse in the sink with soap and water is all you need to give these lids a good hand wash. And of course, while the containers themselves are dishwasher-safe, handwashing the containers can help ensure the longevity of the plastic.

Overall value

Most meal prep beginners usually start out with single-compartment plastic containers because they’re the cheapest and easiest to find. But if you’re at the point in your meal prep journey where you’d benefit from a set of dual compartment containers, these Freshware food storage containers are an affordable, versatile, and sturdy option for any meal prepper.

We liked:

  • 2 compartments with 32 oz. of space for larger portions
  • leak-proof protection between dual compartments
  • stackable lids and containers to save space in the fridge or freezer
  • a budget-friendly option with 15 containers for less than $20

We didn’t like:

  • corner flaps of the lids are prone to cracking if handled roughly
  • containers may leak between compartments if the lids aren’t closed properly
  • no option for a larger 21-pack of containers (only 150-pack available)

Ultimately, at a price of roughly $.75 per container, Freshware’s 2-compartment plastic meal prep containers are a great choice for meal prep beginners who are looking to invest in their next set.
