How long will meal prep last in the fridge?

In a perfect world, meal prep would last forever, and we wouldn’t have to worry about meal prepping once or twice a week. But in the real world, cooked food can easily spoil — and if you’re prepping your meals every week, it’s helpful to know how long these meals will last you.

Below is a list of how long some of the most common cooked meal prep ingredients last in the fridge:

  • meat: 3-4 days
  • poultry: 3-4 days
  • seafood: 3-4 days
  • beans: 3-4 days
  • eggs: 3-4 days
  • hard-boiled eggs: up to 1 week
  • tofu: 4-5 days
  • vegetables: 3-4 days
  • fruit: 3-5 days
  • fresh fruit: varies
  • pasta: 3-5 days
  • rice: 3-4 days
  • potatoes: 3-4 days
  • miscellaneous grains: 3-4 days
  • tomato sauce: 3-5 days
  • meat sauce: 3-4 days
  • curry sauce: 3-4 days
  • cream sauce: 5-7 days
  • soups and stews: 3-4 days
  • oatmeal: 4-6 days
  • fresh nut butter: 3-6 months
  • muffins: up to 1 week
  • cookies: up to 2 weeks

While this isn’t an exhaustive list of every meal prep ingredient out there, it does cover most of the meal prep ingredients that people use every week, like meats, veggies, and grains. And as you can see, most cooked meal prep ingredients only retain their quality (and safety) for about three to five days in the fridge.

It’s important to note that the recommended use-by dates above refer to cooked ingredients stored in the fridge. Raw ingredients may have different use-by dates, which may be longer or shorter than when they’re cooked. Shelf-stable ingredients may also have different use-by dates when stored at room temperature as opposed to in the fridge.

Can meal prep last a week in the fridge?

Even meals that can last a little longer in the fridge usually only taste good for about 4 days, so if your meal plan covers a full week, you have two options.

One option is to meal prep twice during the week, which ensures that your cooked meals won’t spoil before you can eat them. When you meal prep twice, each prep session is intended to cover 3-4 days — which means that you can have a full week of meals without the risk of spoiled food by the end of the week.

Another option is to prep enough food for a week, then freeze any extra portions of food that you won’t eat within those first 3-4 days. Once the end of the week arrives, simply defrost your extra meals and enjoy. Because you can store meals for longer in the freezer than in the fridge, you won’t have to worry about wasting the food you prepared.

How long does meal prep last in the freezer?

If you’re planning to freeze your prepped meals to make them last longer, it’s also helpful to know how long those meals can last in the freezer. Because while freezing can extend the shelf-life of cooked foods indefinitely, that doesn’t mean that the foods will retain their best taste or texture forever. (And frankly, there’s nothing worse than eating a freezer-burned meal.)

According to the FDA, you can store most cooked foods in the freezer for roughly 3-4 months before they begin to lose quality. Some cooked foods might even last longer, for upwards of 6-8 months for example, but it depends on the ingredients.

How to tell when your meal prep has gone bad

When food begins to spoil, you’ll start to notice changes in the way that it looks, smells, and tastes. Here are some of the signs that your meal prep has spoiled:

  • it looks mushy, moldy, or slimy
  • it smells rancid or rotting
  • it tastes sour, bitter, or fishy
  • it has turned a different color

If you’ve noticed any changes in the color, texture, smell, or taste of your food, you may want to consider discarding it for your own safety.

Meal prep may not last indefinitely in the fridge, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t steps you can take to help keep your meal prep fresh for longer. Here are three beginner-friendly tips to keep in mind for making your meal prep last:

  • Double-check your fridge temperature. Although this step is often overlooked, something as simple as an unsafe fridge temperature can cause food to spoil more quickly. Per the USDA, your fridge temperature should always read 40°F or below.
  • Use airtight glass storage containers. When it comes to keeping your meal prep fresh, plastic containers (especially cheap ones) don’t always do a great job. Airtight glass containers, however, are a lot better at keeping meal prep fresh in the fridge for longer.
  • Store extra portions in the freezer. Any food that you can’t eat within 3-5 days will likely spoil by the end of the week if you only keep it in the fridge. If you have extra portions, storing them in the freezer can help you avoid that dreaded food waste.

Meal prep storage FAQ

Storing your meal prep correctly can mean the difference between a week of delicious meals and a bad taste in your mouth (literally and figuratively). So, before you create your next weekly meal plan, here are some things to keep in mind.

Can meal prep last 7 days?

Most prepped food will only last for about three to five days in the fridge before it begins to lose flavor and texture — or possibly spoil. If you’re planning to meal prep enough food for 7 days, aim to keep 3-4 days worth of meals in the fridge and store the rest in the freezer.

How far ahead is it safe to meal prep?

If you’re looking to safely meal prep for longer a few days, freezer-friendly meals are a great option to consider. Many freezer-friendly meal prep recipes can be prepped in bulk ahead of time and then stored safely in the freezer for at least 3-4 months, if not longer.

Should you freeze or refrigerate meal prep?

If you meal prep twice a week, you can likely keep your meals in the fridge without having to worry too much about spoilage. However, if you only prep once a week or less, you’ll get more out of your weekly meal prep if you store your extra meals in the freezer.
