With so many different glass meal prep containers on the market, it’s important to find a container that’s not only affordable, but functional. With dual compartments, sturdy glass, and a special vent feature, these Prep Naturals glass meal prep containers stand out above the rest.

Size

These 2-compartment glass containers feature 29 oz. of space separated into two compartments. One compartment is on the larger side, so you can easily store plenty of pasta, rice, or other main ingredients without having to worry about cutting back on portions. And the other compartment is slightly smaller, which makes it perfect for cooked proteins, a side of veggies, and other ingredients or condiments that you want to keep separated.

One important thing to know about the two compartments in these containers is that there’s a space between the divider and the top of the lid. Because of this, if you happen to tilt your container while moving it, there’s a risk of leakage between the two compartments. (However, the containers themselves are still leakproof.)

Materials

Prep Naturals meal prep containers are made of borosilicate glass, a sturdy and durable type of glass that’s great for food storage. Not only is borosilicate more resistant to extreme changes in temperature, but it’s also less likely to absorb flavors or scents from your food.

As for the lids, these plastic lids feature thick BPA-free plastic, rubber seals, and tightly interlocking snaps. These features help keep these containers both leakproof and airtight, which is important if you want to keep your meal prep fresh for longer. One thing to note is that the interlocking snaps can be stiff at first, so closing the lids might take a little extra effort the first few times you use these containers.

Features

One of the most unique features of these glass containers is the vent on the lid, which helps to release steam from the container without needing to remove the entire lid. However, because the lids are not microwave-safe, you’ll likely only use this venting feature when cooling down your food (like directly after cooking or reheating it).

Storage

We tested the effectiveness of these dual-compartment containers with a meal prep favorite — Japanese curry and rice — to see how well they would keep our ingredients separated.

In our case, using the smaller compartment for rice was a great choice because it freed up room for a larger portion of curry in the other compartment. But you can easily separate your meals according to your own preferences, like using the larger compartment for your carbs, for example.

During fridge storage, there was no leakage between the curry and the rice, as long as we didn’t jostle the containers when putting them into the fridge. And because of the airtight nature of these containers, we were able to keep the curry and rice fresh for the full 3-4 days of fridge storage time.

Heating

One of the advantages of using glass meal prep containers is being able to reheat food directly in the containers. Whether you decide to use the microwave or the oven, you can easily and safely reheat food both ways in these glass meal prep containers.

Microwave

If you’re someone who frequently reheats your meal prep in the microwave, these temperature-resistant glass containers are a must. With thicker glass walls to help insulate food, your meals will come out of the microwave tasting just as delicious as they did first day. Just make sure to remove the lids before reheating your food, as they’re not microwave-safe.

Oven

Because Prep Naturals glass containers use borosilicate glass, they’re perfectly safe to use in the oven (minus the lids, of course). In fact, according to the manufacturers, these glass meal prep containers can withstand temperatures of up to 840 degrees F. As with the microwave, you’ll just have to remove the lids beforehand, as they’re not safe for use in the oven.

Cleaning

Cleaning these dual-compartment meal prep containers is a breeze — especially if you’re someone who likes to save time by using a dishwasher. But while the containers are perfectly dishwasher-safe, you’ll want to be mindful of how you wash these lids.

Dishwasher

When testing these containers in the dishwasher, we tested both the containers and lids (for science, of course). Despite storing food for several days, these glass containers washed perfectly on the top rack with little to no residue left over. Surprisingly, the lids also held up relatively well, with virtually no warping, cracking, or melting.

Handwashing

Although we tested these container lids in the dishwasher, the manufacturer specifically states that the lids for these 2-compartment glass containers are not dishwasher safe. If you’re planning to wash your lids in the dishwasher, you can do so at your own risk — but we recommend sticking to washing them by hand.

Overall value

When it comes to the best meal prep containers for beginners, we often recommend plastic containers because they’re cheap and easy to use when you’re just starting out. However, if you’re looking to invest in your first set of glass meal prep containers, look no further than Prep Naturals’ 2-compartment glass meal prep containers.

We liked:

  • thick and durable borosilicate glass that’s oven-safe
  • two compartments to keep ingredients separated
  • airtight and leakproof lids to keep meal prep fresh for longer
  • plastic vents on the lids to help cool down food quicker
  • relatively affordable option at roughly $6 per container

We didn’t like:

  • not recommended to use lids in the microwave, freezer, or dishwasher
  • no protection from leaks between compartments
  • slightly on the smaller side when it comes to glass containers

At the end of the day, with heat-resistant borosilicate glass, dual compartments to separate food, and airtight, leakproof lids, these glass meal prep containers are a perfect choice for beginner meal prep.
